Athens is blessed with a mild, harmoniously balanced dry climate and a dazzling sunlight that finds its way even through the darkest winter clouds. Attica, the larger Greek Prefecture, home of the Athens Acropolis and of many other ancient treasures, is also one of the most legendary cradles of the Greek wine civilization.
In fact, Attica is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, hosting a great variety of quality wines, like Savatiano that is growing in the area for over 3.000 years.
As Tara Thomas had stated in Wine & Spirit prestigious magazine about this amazing variety, “Savatiano is like drinking the Greek summer: fruity, complete in taste, easy to drink, with the scents of citrus and green apple popping out of the glass; a world-class grape.”
The star of Attica wines is definitely Retsina, a resinated white dry wine, which taste and flavor travelled throughout the ancient Greeks colonies to the south Mediterranean.
As a matter of fact, two millennia years ago Ancient Greeks used a special technique that gave Retsina its distinctive taste and aroma. They have to seal clay amphorae with tree resin to protect the wine of oxidation. For that time to be until nowadays, Retsina wine with its unique character was and will be the most authentic expression of the Greek wine culture.
Over the years though, the vineyards of the region have been radically modernized .The wineries started to cultivate among others, their varieties to a more international “blend” that includes Roditis, Malagouzia, Agiorgitiko, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and more.
This viticulture revolution also brought a new era of haute gastronomy that offers the most inspiring, delicious samples of local and international cuisine.
